Rosewood Sao Paulo to open in former maternity hospital

The Rosewood Sao Paulo, a new hotel located in a renovated former maternity hospital, is set to open Dec. 15.

The hotel in Brazil’s most populated city is part of Cidade Matarazzo, a new mixed-use development located a few blocks from the Sao Paulo Museum of Art.

The hotel was formerly the Condessa Filomena Matarazzo Maternity, where more than 500,000 babies were born. The grounds also include the Chapel of Santa Luzia, another historical building that has been restored to retain its ornate architecture from 1922. As the chapel celebrates its 100-year anniversary in 2022, it is scheduled to reopen for weddings and other celebrations.

The Rosewood Sao Paulo offers 160 guestrooms and 100 Rosewood Residences housed in the restored Matarazzo Maternity building and a new tower designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Jean Nouvel with interiors by designer Philippe Starck.

The hotel will include six distinct food and beverage outlets. The options include Le Jardin, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner in the hotel gardens; Blaise, a French-Swiss restaurant; Taraz, with a menu of South American cuisine showcasing wood-fired cooking; Rabo di Galo, a jazz bar with craft cocktails and Brazilian bar snacks; Emerald Garden Pool and Bar, a restaurant offering family-friendly fare; and Belavista Rooftop Pool and Bar, an adults-only space with views of the city.

Amenities include two pools, a cinema, music studio, event space and Asaya, Rosewood’s wellness concept, in addition to a permanent collection of art with more than 450 works by 57 contemporary Brazilian artists.
