Virgin Voyages cancels Miami celebration of first ship coronavirus

Virgin Voyages has canceled the Miami launch celebration of
its first ship, the Scarlet Lady, due to the coronavirus crisis.

Without specifically mentioning the virus, the company said
in an email to invited guests that “in light of the current global headlines,
we want to ensure everyone feels it is the right time to celebrate with us.”

“While Virgin Voyages has not been affected, we feel that
postponing our launch celebration to a future date is the responsible thing to
do,” the company wrote. “We plan to celebrate with you in Miami very soon.”

The event was scheduled for March 18. Virgin Voyages also
postponed its March 8 showcase of the ship in New York, citing the same reason.
Miami is the ship’s homeport.

“We have absolutely no health concerns or issues on board
and elevated our health protocol and processes when we took delivery of Scarlet
Lady to keep our crew and visitors well,” the company said.

The 2,770-passenger ship had already made Dover and
Liverpool stops over the past month.

The Scarlet Lady was delivered in early February by the
Fincantieri shipyard in Genoa, Italy. Virgin Voyages has three other ships on
order.

Virgin Voyages had hoped to make a big splash with the ship,
sending a blast email last Friday highlighting specific crew members and their
favorite features onboard.

“We do things a bit differently,” the company wrote.
