New tour at Iolani Palace focuses on King Kalakaua

Hawaii’s Iolani Palace has launched a new tour that showcases the life of the Islands’ last reigning king, David Kalakaua. The tour will share the king’s achievements and historical accounts as it takes guests to the basement galleries to see some of the Kalakaua’s personal items.

“King Kalakaua had and continues to have an incredible impact on the people of Hawaii,” said Paula Akana, executive director of Friends of Iolani Palace. “His efforts in international relations, technological innovation and cultural preservation brought our islands worldwide recognition. We are honored to be able to share his legacy with both kamaaina [residents] and visitors from around the globe.”

The 90-minute tours are held Wednesdays at 3:45 p.m. Prices are $77.95 for ages 13 and up and $51.95 for children ages 5 to 12.
