Lonely Planet has released its new Best in Travel book today. Naming the best destinations, journeys and experiences for the year ahead, being named in the guide is quite a feat.
Tom Hall, Lonely Planet’s VP of Experience said: “After an enforced hiatus, it’s time to take those long-postponed travel plans off the shelf and make them a reality.
“The lists celebrate the world in all its wonderful enticing variety.
“As always Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel delivers new takes on popular destinations such as Iceland, Norway, Slovenia and Dublin, Ireland, and unearths some of the gems on our doorstep like the Kent Downs Heritage Coast and arguably Germany’s most sustainable city, Freiburg.”
The Best in Travel book includes three lists, countries, cities and regions.

The UK only appeared once on the lists, within the top five of the best regions in the world.
In first place was Westfjords in Iceland.
The Icelandic fjords were followed by West Virginia in the USA and Xishuangbanna in China.
In fourth place, Kent’s Heritage Coast made its entry.
The region is committed to sustainable tourism and has big plans for the future.
There are plans to set up a Biosphere reserve and to get the Strait of Dover on the UNESCO World Heritage Site list.
The region also has a regeneration initiative for the historic towns of Dover and Folkestone.
The guide lauded the region’s “iconic white cliffs” and the beautiful countryside.
Recommendations for holidaymakers include biking along the Chalk and Channel Way.
The Kent Downs’ vineyards also get a mention for their “champagne-like fizz”.
Lonely Place’s Best in Travel’s destinations are first chosen by the Lonely Planet community.
This included the staff, writers, publishing partners and everyone else involved with the famous guidebooks.
Travel experts then took the recommendations and chose the winners based on “topicality, unique experiences, “wow” factor and ongoing commitment to sustainable tourism practices”.
