On Wednesday’s Four in a Bed, the Channel 4 programme took a look inside Earlston House Hotel in Paignton, Devon. Owned by former teachers Midge and Aidan, the guest house has an eco-friendly focus, with recycling and saving water a top priority.

According to the programme: “Guests can stay in one of eight rooms costing up to £130 a night including breakfast and an education in all things environmental.”

Midge explained: “Since we have bought the B&B being eco-friendly was really important to us.

“We have reduced the use of water, shower timers and then Aidan has sourced quite a few eco-friendly cleaning products.”

However, it’s environmental-focus is not the main draw of the accommodation according to its owners.

In fact, Aidan and Midge say their finest asset is actually the breakfast they serve up, with is included in the cost of the room.

“I challenge anyone to find a better breakfast in Paignton than you get in Earlston House,” Aidan stated.

Midge added: “We’ve had nothing but good reviews on the breakfast.”

The couple serves up a hot breakfast option, which can be customised by guests to add or remove certain elements, alongside a cold buffet.

The cold breakfast options served up included a fruit salad, described by one guest as “colourful” as well as a fruit compote and juices.

“There’s a good selection, it looks delicious,” commented guest Pete.

However, when it came to the title of “best breakfast in Paignton” it seems the guests were a little let down.

Breakfasts were served up in something of a “mix up”, with one guest left without the poach egg she requested, and another minus a hash brown.

“He gave me a fried egg instead of a poached egg. I’m not sure whether it was nerves or if he just wasn’t writing it down right,” commented one guest.

Another added: “I said ‘can I have a regular breakfast?’ It was delivered wrong twice.”

Even once orders were provided, guests weren’t blown away by the taste.

When asked about the sausage on his fry up, one guest said: “It’s not good and it’s not bad. The sausage is quite solid.”

In summary, one guest said: “After Midge and Aidan were budding up their breakfast I can say I was left underwhelmed.”

Other parts of the review saw the furniture described as “fusty smelling” and recycling bins included in bedrooms as “unsightly”.

However, there were also plenty of perks of the Devon B&B.

Bathrooms were described as “lovely and up-to-date”, meanwhile the eco-friendly shower additions were also applauded.

“The clever egg timer makes you aware of how long you have been in the shower,” said one guest.

Guests also reported sleeping “very well” even scoring the hotel with a 10.

Overall though, it seems “Devon’s best breakfast” was the key aspect which let Earlston House down.

Luckily, Aidan and Midge took the criticism onboard.

“We’ve done well. There are things we need to look at, but I am confident we are going to win this because we have an excellent hotel that gives good value for money,” concluded B&B owner Aidan.
