Bournemouth has been named the fish and chips capital of the UK. The new research by card payment specialists takepayments Limited looked at the number of fish and chips shops across UK locations.

Bournemouth has a staggering 119 fish and chips shops, making it a worthy capital of the popular takeaway.

Coastal towns made it into the top 25 locations for fish and chips.

After Bournemouth, Torquay and Paignton both have over 100 fish and chip shops.

Coastal towns take their fish and chips seriously, with Tenby and its 5,000 inhabitants having over 43 fish and chips options.

The study pointed out this is 7.8 fish and chip shop/restaurants per 1,000 people.

Britons are probably already aware that coastal towns are the best places to get their fish and chips.

But the study also looked at the best value eats.

And this time, it’s not Bournemouth that comes top.

Margate was named the best location for value fish, chips and mushy peas.

A portion of fish and chips and mushy peas from the top-rated shop in the area only cost £5.

Margate was followed by Dawlish and Shanklin as best value locations.

Sandra Rowley from takepayments said: “Who doesn’t love fish and chips by the sea?

“Our research goes to show that there is still huge demand for fish and chips across the country but even more so for coastal towns with hundreds of fish and chip shops serving to hungry tourists.

“Our customer data reveals we have seen an impressive increase of 28 percent in fish and chip shop independents opening compared to the Summer of 2019.”
