Travel experts say your airport outfit is key to getting a free flight upgrade

Getting bumped up from economy to first class without paying a penny is the ultimate holy grail in travel.

While it doesn't happen often, there are ways to put the odds in your favour – and travel experts have revealed that it can come down to the outfit you're wearing.

In fact, insiders have advised holidaymakers to "dress smart" and stay away from "items that are too casual" if they're hoping to bag that coveted luxury flight.

One travel expert at ForbesAdvisor said: "While dressing in your finest clothes is no guarantee for an upgrade, a smart outfit will certainly enhance your chances of being chosen.

"Top paying customers will often be dressed sharper, and airlines will want to ensure anyone they bump to first-class looks the part.

"Don’t feel the need to dress in anything extravagant. However, just make sure you avoid items that are too casual like flip flops and cargo shorts."

Of course, there's nothing to stop you packing some comfier clothes in your hand luggage and changing once you're on the plane!

It's not the first time that Brits have been warned that their outfit choice can play a big role.

Flight attendants have previously shared the reasons they give out upgrades, and while being polite to staff or being clever about when you check-in are key, outfits are also a crucial part.

One flight attendant previously told WhoWhatWear that it's "all about looking the part" if you want a First Class trip.

They advised: "Smart but understated. You should look like you travel often. But don't be dripping in designer clothing. It helps; someone who is potentially due to get an upgrade can be knocked back if they aren't dressed suitably."
