Travel warning: Expert reveals the best type of holiday to book to avoid ‘big risk’ abroad

Booking a package holiday will give you the best “protection” amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, a travel expert has told Emma Coulthurst from holiday price comparison site, TravelSupermarket offered insight and advice into how Britons can avoid “big risks”. Many people are springing for last-minute holidays as countries like Portugal are added to the Government’s safe travel list.

Ms Coulthurst said: “Everyone makes their own decision on where to go, but my recommendation would be to book a package.

“It’s got that ATOL protection, it’s got the Package Travel Regulation protection.

“We don’t want this to happen but if there was a reason the holiday couldn’t take place, you would get your money back.

“There’s a lot of pressure on companies, even though they’re struggling and people understand they’re struggling, to pay refunds.”

She continued: “There’s pressure to make sure more and more companies are paying, maybe a couple of weeks late, but they are paying out.

“So you will get your money back, it’s a legal requirement for you to get your money back.

“Additionally pay on a credit card because it gives you that extra protection. That would be my advice.

“If you are going to go down that DIY route of booking a flight separately, make sure it’s on a credit card.”

The travel expert added: “If you’re going for separate accommodation, make sure you’ve read the T&Cs and know that you can get a refund.

“Make sure you can cancel it up to the last minute and get your full money back so it’s not a big risk that you’re taking.”

Ms Coulthurst gave some examples of destinations that are offering autumn holidays.

She told “If you want to secure a good deal, there are some good prices out there.

“For example, seven nights direct flights to Dubai including a four-star hotel, often bed and breakfast.

“Some really good deals for the likes of Benidorm in November.

“The weather’s not great but it’s a really popular time to go and it’s always sunnier than it is here.

“There’s also some really good deals for Turkey. Five star, £360 per person in October.”

It comes as last week thousands of Britons rushed back from Croatia after it was added to the UK quarantine list.

The move from the Government came after they already took Spain and France away from the travel list.
