If you didn’t manage to go abroad in summer 2021, you’re probably desperate to hop on a plane and go somewhere sunny this winter. Not sure where to go? Express.co.uk reveals the best eight destinations for January sun, according to the Met Office and TUI.

Lanzarote, in particular Playa Blanca, is the perfect place to jet off to in January with average highs of around 20.8C and lows of 16C.

The island is just four hours away on average from the UK, so it’s not a tiresome journey.

Lanzarote is host to more than 100 stunning beaches to relax on and if you’re travelling with kids, you can spend a fun day or two at the Aquapark Costa Teguise waterpark.

Tenerife is the biggest and busiest island in the Canary Islands, and that’s not any different in January.

The South of the island reaches around 21C in January and experiences up to six hours of daily sunshine… What’s not to love?

Pack your swimming costumes and trunks for the day and a mixture of summer clothes and warmer clothes for the evening.

Cape Verde

Cape Verde reaches an average of 25C in January, making it the ideal location for a warm trip in January.

Expect six hours of sunshine a day with minimal to no rainfall.

Even though January is Cape Verde’s coldest month, you can still swim on the beach and go mountain climbing without bad weather.

Cape Town, South Africa

Cape Town is at least 11 hours away from the UK, but the long flight is worth it in January.

Expect an average temperature of 27C and 11 hours of sunshine.

Soak up the sun on the picturesque beaches, go on an impressive hike on the Table Mountain range and go to the Cape Town Minstrel Carnival at the start of the month.

Flying to Barbados takes around eight and a half hours from the UK, but you won’t be disappointed.

The average daily maximum temperature is a gorgeous 29C and the sandy white beaches are like something out of a magazine or movie.

It’s not too hot either, as the trade winds are excellent at cooling down the hot air.

Cancun, Mexico

Cancun has a year-round tropical climate, so it makes sense to visit the city for the winter sun.

You will experience an average daily temperature of 30.5C, which you won’t find anywhere in Europe.

The trip might not be rain-free, though, as there is an average of 40mm of total rainfall in the month.

Costa Rica

The average temperature in sunny Costa Rica in January is 27C, but it can reach up to 33C.

It’s the place to be if you want a mixture of stunning beaches, wild-life filled rainforests and mountain views.

According to the experts at TUI, January is the best time to visit the country if you want to see the forest’s sloths, hummingbirds and toucans.

Thailand has just the right weather in January, with temperatures sitting between 27C and 32C every day.

There are so many different areas to stay in Thailand, from Phuket’s white sandy coastline to bustling Bangkok (and the temperature is warm everywhere).

The Gulf and Andaman coasts see lots of sunshine and very little rain in January, which is exactly what you want on holiday.
