Brits are fuming that they rushed to return home from Portugal – only for it to stay off the quarantine list.
John Cushing spent £1,000 to fly back from the country after rumours that travel restrictions were about to be implemented.
The dad, from Bristol, didn’t want his 12-year-old daughter Georgie to miss her first days back at school.
So to make sure they had a two week buffer to self isolate, he stumped up a grand for flights on Thursday – triple what he’d paid initially.
The holidaymaker told BBC: "My daughter was in tears yesterday at the thought of not being able to go back to school and see her friends.
"She has already missed most of year seven [at school] and I can't let her miss the first two weeks of year eight."
John had hoped for a stress-free holiday when Portugal was given the all clear.
He forked out £320 for return flights for himself and his daughter.
They arrived last week and planned to return on Saturday – but came home earlier than intended.
The dad says airlines weren’t very understanding about the situation.
He added: "The airlines have us over a barrel and don't seem to have any sympathy."
It was a similar story for Jodie Hudson-Cox, who flew home early from the Algarve.
The Essex-based tourist decided to return in case quarantine measures were imposed.
She said: "I re-booked early this week for flights coming back into East Midlands airport on Friday.
"We booked the flights so we weren't sat here worrying about it all week."
Meanwhile, Birmingham-based mum Kelly Jones said the Government kept "moving the goalposts left, right and centre”.
She was surprised when Portugal remained on the exempt list – especially after splashing out £900 to move her flights home from Faro from Saturday to Friday.
In a similar case to John, she didn’t want her children to miss out on school by being placed in quarantine.
She described the situation as “absolutely disgusting”, before adding: "There's no way it would be fair on them two weeks later to go in when everyone else has already started to settle.”
