A flight attendant has opened up about her job, revealing “secrets” that only cabin crew know – including why they ask passengers to “stow away tray tables” before landing and takeoff.

Cierra_Mistt on TikTok told her 3.5 million followers all about the unique profession and answered questions travellers are intrigued to know.

In the video, titled “spicy flight attendant and pilot tea”, Cierra told her followers why cabin crew dim the lights before takeoff and landing.

She said this is in the event of a crash or emergency.

The TikToker said: “Flight will always turn off the cabin lights during takeoff and landing.”

This, she said, is “because that’s most likely when we’re going to get an emergency crash and so our eyes are going to already be adjusted to the outside settings”.

Cierra went on: “Speaking of crashes, the reason we ask you guys to put your tray tables up and your seats forward is if we get in a crash.

“Because it actually only takes about 60 to 90 seconds for an entire plane to ignite in flames.
