Winter isn’t usually the most popular time to go on holiday. But tourists who are willing to brave cold temperatures will find it’s cheaper and much less crowded.

While winter can be dreary in the UK, that isn’t the case in many incredible European city destinations. I visited Copenhagen in January and thought it was a fantastic time of year to explore the Danish capital.

There were far fewer tourists than in the summer months which gave me a chance to get a better glimpse into the local lifestyle.

Although the sun can set as early as 3:30pm in January, Danish people know how to enjoy winter. It’s not without reason that the Danish concept of hygge became so popular.

Hygge means embracing comfort and cosiness and Copenhagen is packed with well-lit cafes where you can enjoy the best of winter warmth.

READ MORE The ‘idyllic’ village that’s one of the most beautiful in the world

Copenhagen’s top attraction, and probably its most photographed, is the pretty Nyhavn harbour with its coloured houses. Wrap up warm to check out this spot in winter but if you’re on a budget avoid the cafes in this area.

Unsurprisingly Nyhavn is the most touristy part of the city and the prices reflect that. I loved exploring Copenhagen’s Botanical Garden.

The Garden is home to Copenhagen’s largest collection of plants and it’s open every day except Monday. It’s also free to explore although there is a small fee to enter the Palm House.

‌

Don’t miss…
