In the wake of the covid-19 pandemic many Brits have ditched far-flung summer holidays for getaways closer to home.
Staycations are seemingly here to, well, stay, and the UK is brimming with beautiful towns and cities that make for charming alternatives to arduous long-haul flights.
Perfect for domestic travellers, there’s one destination that has it all – Yorkshire.
God’s Own County, as it’s affectionately known by its inhabitants, is the largest county in the country and is known for its stunning scenery.
Highlights include the breathtaking rolling hills of Nidderdale and the gorgeous greenery of the Howardian Hills – both designated Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

A walker’s paradise, Yorkshire is also home to the North York Moors, Yorkshire Dales, and part of the Peak District National Park.
As well as its picturesque environment, Yorkshire is home to eight cities – Bradford, Kingston Upon Hull, Leeds, Ripon, Sheffield, Wakefield, York, and, as of 2022, Doncaster.
Each comes with their individual quirks and reasons to visit, for example Bradford, named the UK’s City of Culture for 2025 – 2029, is home to the illuminating National Science and Media Museum (currently undergoing refurbishment) and the fascinating Bradford Industrial Museum.
Kingston Upon Hull, a previous UK City of Culture (2017 – 2021) is home to The Deep, an award-winning aquarium with over 5,000 animals that makes for a great family day out.

York is one of the UK’s most beautiful cities, and its cobbled streets are full of history. The Shambles, contrary to what its name may suggest, is an attractive street for visitors to wander around and explore the city’s Mediaeval past.
Travelling even further back in time, the Jorvik Viking Centre is an informative and engaging experience for all ages.
It would be remiss not to mention a visit to York Minster, one of the world’s most eye-catching cathedrals. Founded almost 1400 years ago, the cathedral standing today has retained most of it’s beautiful medieval stained glass windows.
The towns of Yorkshire, of which there are many, are equally worth exploring – the quaint village of Sherburn in Elmet is even home to one of the best fish and chip shops in the country.
Whitby is a stunning seaside town for visitors who enjoy the fresh sea air and is a must-visit in North Yorkshire.
The stylish spa town of Harrogate is also a staycation destination that needs to be added to your 2024 list.
