The pretty commuter town full of independent shops named one of the best places

With streets lined with independent shops, this pretty commuter town has been named one of the best places to live in the UK.

Sudbury in Suffolk has been praised for its “historic town setting” and the “miles of tranquil riverside walks right on your doorstep” by Muddy Stilettos who named it in its 2023 list of the top 250 places to live in the country.

The travel blog, which also featured the town in its 2022 list, also praised it for its charm and creative history as the former home of Thomas Gainsborough and John Constable.

Sudbury is also home to the Grade I listed St Peter’s Church which stands in its town centre along with Sudbury Corn Exchange which was built in the 1830s and currently operates as the town’s library.

The town even has a market held twice weekly, on Thursday and Saturday, giving visitors the perfect opportunity to pick up fresh local produce.

The town also plays host to a number of events, with a popular fireworks display taking place in November and an annual Party in the Park summer event which sees a wide range of entertainment take place in its Belle Vue Park.

Those wishing to learn a little bit about the town’s history can visit its Gainsborough House museum and see where the leading English painter grew up.

Sudbury Heritage Centre also houses the town’s photo archive, a local history booth showing presentations on different parts of the town’s history and a collection of artefacts relating to the town.

For those seeking something a bit more thrilling, the town also hosts a number of escape rooms in EO Escape Rooms and Sudbury Escape Rooms.

Sudbury’s Quay Theatre claims to be “the best small theatre experience in East Anglia” having seen well-known acts including Alan Carr, Toyah Wilcox and Josh Widdicombe take to its stage.

While Sudbury is already packed with beautiful architecture, it also has the Talbot Trail which offers visitors the chance to roam around the town finding 14 quaint statues depicting scenes from its history.

But Sudbury is perhaps best known for its wide range of interesting independent shops from Rafi’s Spicebox, which offers a selection of handmade curry mixes, to greetings card specialists Perfect Presents Cards and Gifts.

It also has a great selection of pubs such as the Gainsborough Pub, named after one of the town’s most famous sons, and the Bay Horse, which regularly sees live music performances.

Those wishing to sample Sudbury for themselves can book into its central Lady Elizabeth bed and breakfast for about £80 per night in November.
